Fire bans have been put in place along swathes of Australia one year on from the horror Black Summer blazes.
Much of Victoria s northwest has been placed under a total fire ban as the state braces for soaring temperatures beyond 41C and dry winds, as well as parts of South Australia and southern NSW.

Extreme Fire Risk for Victoria’s Northwest
A total fire ban has been declared in much of Victoria’s northwest as the state braces for scorching temperatures and dry winds.
The Country Fire Authority says large parts of the state face a very high to extreme fire risk on December 27 with the biggest potential danger for the northwest, where temperatures are set to peak at 41C.
CFA Chief Officer Jason Heffernan says the conditions have made a total fire ban necessary for four districts until 11.59pm on Sunday.
“The Mallee, Wimmera, North Central and Northern Country will experience elevated dangerous fire conditions and as a result, we have declared a Total Fire Ban across the four districts,” Heffernan said in a statement. ....

A Total Fire Ban (TFB) has been declared for the Mallee, Wimmera, North Central and Northern Country fire districts for tomorrow, Sunday 27 December 2020.
Tomorrow’s conditions in the Mallee, Wimmera, North Central and Northern Country will be hot and dry, with temperatures reaching as high as 41 degrees in the far north.
Warm, dry and fresh to strong north-westerly winds have been forecast, before a south-westerly wind change that is expected to bring damaging wind gusts before the temperature drops in the afternoon. Thunderstorms will develop during the afternoon, bringing localised scattered rainfall of less than 5mm near the change and dry lightning inland. ....

Outside of the Central Otago fire ban area, fires are still restricted in the rest of the region, meaning permits are needed to light fires outdoors.

As of 8am Friday 18 December , Auckland mainland is in a Restricted Fire Season.
All the Hauraki Gulf Islands are in a Prohibited Fire Season – meaning no outdoor fires are allowed on the Islands. This Total Fire Ban has been in place since Monday 14 December.
Principal Rural Fire Officer Thomas Harre says a Restricted Fire Season means fires are by permit only. People will need to apply for a permit before being able to light an outdoor fire on the Auckland mainland. Anyone with a permit will need to follow the conditions prior to lighting their fire. ....
