If approved by the Board of Alders, which received the proposal July 29, the Department of Community Resilience would work collaboratively to focus on a range of social issues within the city. Violence prevention, mental health, homelessness, crisis response and re-entry services would be the department’s points of focus. In a news conference Monday, those who were instrumental in conceptualizing this department explained these issues are often intertwined. “Very often, an individual who experiences one of these challenges, experiences multiple, if not all of these challenges,” said New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker. ....

New Haven Police received multiple 911 calls just before 8:30 p.m. regarding a person shot, on Sherman Parkway near the intersection with Munson Street, according to spokesman Officer Scott Shumway. Responding officers located a 34-year-old West Haven man, who was fatally shot, Shumway said in an email. New Haven Fire and American Medical Response were on the scene where they pronounced the man deceased. Shumway said a 28-year-old New Haven man “remained on the scene and identified himself as being involved in the incident.” ....

(Shutterstock) NEW HAVEN, CT - The city formally announced its partnership with the Connecticut Mental Health Center to run the Community Crisis Response Team planning phase. Announced last summer, the Crisis Response Team was created as a plan to better allocate city services when residents call during an emergency, according to a news release from the city. Mayor Justin Elicker and Community Services Administrator, Dr. Mehul Dalal, and members from CMHC and the state Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services Commissioner Miriam Delphin-Rittmon made the announcement Monday. ....
