When the coronavirus began spreading in earnest last March, states issued stay-at-home orders and asked residents to stay inside, avoid large crowds and regularly wash their hands. If they were exposed to or infected with the coronavirus, they needed to quarantine or isolate in their homes immediately. ....

Coronavirus Today: Three places the surge spared

Real estate is all about
location, location, location. The same seems to apply to the pandemic.
While L.A. County’s overall coronavirus case rate skyrocketed by 450% during the holiday surge, there were certain neighborhoods that saw nothing more than a brief blip on the radar. My colleagues Matt Stiles and Hayley Smith report on three of those

They have easy access to outdoor space, where the virus’ strength is diminished. ....

THE BUZZ
Two political truisms to start your day: Campaigning is easier than governing, and a reason thorny issues endure is that they rarely have easy solutions.
We were thinking about both principals on Wednesday as Gov. Gavin Newsom’s would-be Republican rivals continued to lambaste him over schools ....

Coronavirus Today: Our homegrown triple threat

Coronavirus variants aren’t just an international problem anymore.
Scientists at UC San Francisco are ready to tag
California’s homegrown coronavirus strain as a “variant of concern,” putting it in the company of those from the United Kingdom, South Africa and Brazil. The state’s dominant strain packs a triple-threat punch: It can spread more easily than its predecessors, it shows some resistance to antibodies generated by COVID-19 vaccines or prior infection, and it’s associated with severe illness and death, my colleague Melissa Healy reports.

“The devil is already here,” said Dr. Charles Chiu, who led the UCSF team of geneticists, epidemiologists, statisticians and other scientists in a wide-ranging analysis of the new variant. “I wish it were different. But the science is the science.” ....
