Jeremiah Perry was out of his depth in Algonquin Park’s cold, deep water when he went on his school canoe trip almost four years ago.
Like many children who grew up in the Caribbean, the 15-year-old didn’t know how to swim and was only allowed to wade into the warm sea waters with floating aids or a life jacket.

Wiping away tears, Jeremiah Perry s mother testified at the trial for her son s teacher Nicholas Mills about how protective she was of her children, all three who could not swim.
Mills, a 57-year-old physical education teacher is charged with criminal negligence causing the death of 15-year-old Jeremiah, who drowned while on a school canoe trip in July 2017.
As a single mother, Melissa Perry said she often worked three or four jobs to pay for rent and bills. She said despite the fact Jeremiah would have loved to have learned how to swim, she could not afford swimming lessons. ....

The trial of a Toronto school teacher, accused of criminal negligence in the drowning death of a 15-year-old student, has begun.
On July 4, 2017, Jeremiah Perry was on a school canoe trip when he drowned in Big Trout Lake at Algonquin Provincial Park.
“He wanted to learn to swim, but I could not afford it,” his mother, Melissa Perry told the court on Tuesday morning. “As a single mother, yeah, it was hard, because I had bills to pay.
Perry testified that her son lived in the Caribbean with his grandmother or with her until September 2016, when Jeremiah and his brother moved to Toronto to live with their father. ....
