The findings of the study were published in the Endocrine Society s Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism. The study also found that these harmful chemicals may influence hormonal shifts during pregnancy. Postpartum depression is a serious and common psychiatric disorder that affects up to 1 in 5 childbearing women. The cause of postpartum depression is not well understood, but hormonal changes during pregnancy have been found to be an important factor. ....

US researchers found women with higher traces of phthalates – a group of chemicals used in hundreds of products including plastic packaging – in their system were more likely to develop postpartum depression. The post-birth, or postpartum , period has already been associated with mood swings, crying spells, anxiety and difficulty sleeping. But the study authors, from New York University Langone Medical Center, blame exposure to harmful chemicals that influence hormonal shifts during pregnancy.
