In 1926, a 2,000-ton steel-hulled schooner named
Buckau made an extraordinary crossing across the Atlantic. Although the
Buckau was technically a sailing ship, it had no sails at least, not conventional ones.
Rather than thin masts and billowing sheets of white, the
Buckau had two huge cylinders that rose from its deck and spun. By a physical phenomenon called the Magnus Effect, the spinning poles generated a propulsive force that carried the ship forward. It’s the same force that footballers use to bend a corner kick, cricketers use to swing a delivery, and a tennis player use to hang the ball just a little longer in the air. ....

Maersk Pelican, the world’s first product tanker testing the use of wind propulsion technology, has been sold and delivered to its new owner, Maersk Tankers said.
Data from VesselsValue shows that the LR2 tanker has been sold to Buana Lintas Lautan, an oil and gas company from Indonesia, for an undisclosed price.
The 13-year old, 109,600 cbm vessel has been renamed Timberwolf, and it has been fixed on a one-year charter at $14,5000 + profit share to Shell Trading and Shipping Co, according to VV.
Maersk Tankers installed the two Norsepower rotor sails onboard Maersk Pelican in 2018 and over a one-year test period, it showcased an 8.2% drop in fuel consumption and emissions. ....

Norsepower Oy Ltd., the leading global provider of auxiliary wind propulsion systems, announced its first newbuild order the installation of a record five tilting Rotor Sails (earlier post) on board a large bulk carrier.
The agreement marks the first installation of Norsepower’s innovative Rotor Sails on a bulk carrier, demonstrating the adaptability of the technology to reduce fuel consumption, fuel costs and reduce emissions across a variety of vessel types.
The
Maersk Pelican tanker was equipped with two 30x5 Rotor Sails in 2018. Independent measurements conducted by Lloyd’s Register confirmed savings of 8.2% during the first year of operation. Two Rotor Sails 30x5 are expected to reduce average fuel consumption on typical global shipping routes by 7-10%. ....

Finnish auxiliary wind propulsion systems’ provider Norsepower Oy Ltd. has won its first newbuild order for the installation of a record five tilting Rotor Sails on board a large bulk carrier. 
The agreement heralds the first installation of Norsepower’s innovative Rotor Sails on a bulk carrier. The owner of the newbuild prefers to stay anonymous at this point in time, according to Norsepower.
The company said the deal demonstrates the adaptability of the technology to reduce fuel consumption, fuel costs and reduce emissions across a variety of vessel types. ....
