Outdoor dining plan proposed for Merrion Row

Outdoor dining plan proposed for Merrion Row
Dublin City Council proposes trial partial pedestrianisation of road during the summer
about 2 hours ago

Proposals to reduce traffic on Dublin’s Merrion Row to one lane to facilitate summer outdoor dining when Covid-19 restrictions ease have been made available for public consultation.
The Dublin City Council proposals, which would see the three traffic lanes on the road reduce to one, would involve the redirection of traffic onto Hume Street and Ely Place from St Stephen’s Green to avoid bottlenecks on Merrion Row.
Dublin City Council said it had been approached by businesses on Merrion Row seeking the full pedestrianisation of the street to facilitate outdoor dining. However, it said the National Transport Authority had advised that the removal of buses from the street was “not feasible from an operational point of view”. ....

On 18 April 1980, three army privates were stopped by a militia known as the De Facto Force
Security Correspondent, Prime Time
John O Mahony spent 40 years waiting to see the man who shot him and murdered his colleagues brought to justice.

That is the man who shot me, John told the court, pointing directly at Mr Bazzi. ....

The plan to pedestrianise Merrion Row in Dublin City Centre this summer is “hare-brained” and “not going to happen,” according to councillor Mannix Flynn.
The Sunday Times reports that the council has agreed to pedestrianise Merrion Row, Mary Street and part of Capel Street in a bid to entice people back into town as restrictions are eased.
Following the success of last summer’s
pedestrianisation of five streets in the Grafton area, there are also calls for a range of other streets in the city to go car-free as the country reopens.
It follows the news that 17 streets in Cork will be permanently pedestrianised to help breathe life back into the city. ....

SPOTLIGHT: The vindication of Violet Gibson, the woman who attempted to assassinate Mussolini

He walked through the cheering crowd in the grand square designed by Michelangelo, acknowledging the adulation of the people, occasionally touching the brim of his bowler in salute. A choir of students broke into a political anthem and just as he turned to view them a small and dishevelled woman stepped out of the crowd, pointed a small pistol at his head and, from point-blank range pulled the trigger.
That movement of the head may have changed history. Had the bullet hit the target square between the eyes, and not just clipped Benito Mussolini’s nose as he turned away, then he might never have been an inspiration to Hitler and what followed would have been different, although no doubt just as evil. ....
