Former chief of staff Keith Schembri will be facing cross examination by the lawyers of Yorgen Fenech, a former friend of his who now stands charged with Daphne Caruana Galizia s murder.
The development came at the end of a three-hour compilation of evidence sitting on Thursday.
Defence lawyer Charles Mercieca listed Schembri, Fenech s associate Johann Cremona, Europol experts and murder middlemen among those the defence team wishes to cross-examine.
Fenech denies the charges against him, insisting that Schembri was behind the murder of the journalist in October 2017.
In court testimony last year, it emerged that Fenech had told police during his interrogation that it was Schembri who wanted to murder Caruana Galizia and that he allegedly paid Melvin Theuma €85,000. Schembri has strongly denied the claims, saying he never spoke to the businessman about the murder.

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH â A partnership between developers and the Wrightsville Beach Marina will add 16 boat slips to the marinaâs fleet. Affiliates of Zimmer Development Company purchased the property adjacent to the draw bridge on Marina Street for $4.3 million last July, and construction of four condos on the site is underway.
âItâs going to be a class-A project, very high-end condos,â Lowell Zimmer said. âThese are not just spec condos.â
Impact studies should be made before the proposed new roads project in the heart of Msida is approved, local council minority leader Charles Selvaggi has insisted.
The project, first announced in 2019, will see roads agency Infrastructure Malta build flyovers and wider roads at the Msida junction, removing traffic lights in a bid to ease congestion. It has attracted a wave of criticism from lobby groups.
In a statement published on Monday, a number of environment NGOs said the project has sparked concern about its long-term viability.
Selvaggi told Times of Malta that he had written to the other councillors requesting a meeting to discuss the project.
