Former Democratic Virginia governor rips McAuliffe on blackface scandal reversal

Former Virginia Gov. Doug Wilder is seeking answers from fellow Democrat Terry McAuliffe about reversing his condemnation of the state s current Democratic leaders during blackface and sexual assault scandals all while blocking black candidates from securing the Democratic gubernatorial nomination by seeking a second nonconsecutive term as governor.
Wilder, who was the first-ever black politician to be elected governor of a U.S. state in 1989, wrote in a Facebook post on Tuesday about McAuliffe s previous condemnations of current Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam and Democratic Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) A federal appeals court on Wednesday upheld a ruling dismissing a defamation lawsuit filed by Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax after CBS News broadcast interviews with two women who accused him of sexual assault.
In its ruling, a three-judge panel of the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals said that because Fairfax is a public official, he can seek redress for any alleged defamatory statements only if CBS published them with “actual malice,” meaning “with knowledge that it was false or with reckless disregard of whether it was false or not.” The judges said Fairfax had not shown that. ....

RICHMOND A federal appeals court on Wednesday affirmed a lower court s decision dismissing Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax s defamation lawsuit against CBS over interviews the network aired in 2019 with two women accusing Fairfax of sexual assault.
