In springtime, visitors to the Black Swamp Bird Observatory (BSBO) are eager to enjoy The Biggest Week in American Birding. First-timers often discover they don’t have to go very far to see a wide range of colorful migrating birds.
In fact, the birding can be excellent right around the BSBO headquarters nestled in the Magee Marsh Wildlife Area on the Lake Erie shoreline.
Located at 13551 W. State Rt. 2 in Oak Harbor the Village of Oak Harbor is just to the south it’s easy to find with the highway signage.
Here are some birding hotspots shared by BSBO members and birding experts.
CARROLL TOWNSHIP - As the clock hit 8 a.m. Friday, a Division of Wildlife staffer walked up to a door to Magee Marsh Wildlife Area s popular boardwalk area and unlocked it.
That s not usually how birding season kicks off at Magee Marsh s boardwalk, where thousands of bird enthusiasts nationwide converge in Ottawa County annually during peak migration.
It didn t matter to Rebecca Torisky.
She drove up from Marysville and stood first in line Friday, eager to see the warblers and other birds she missed last year.
Torisky normally comes up to Magee Marsh at least once a year and her trek is a much shorter trip than those taken by birds that migrate through the marsh.
