The Metro Council approved Cooper’s capital spending plan, but a public works proposal raises questions

Last week was a busy one for Mayor John Cooper and the Metro Council.
The legislative body considered and approved a nearly $500 million capital spending plan brought by the mayor. The list of approved spending includes $100 million for a new high school in Bellevue, $15 million for a new police precinct in Antioch and $122 million in transportation projects, described by Cooper as the first step in his transportation plan.
The debate over the capital spending plan — as it usually is — was focused on whether the city was spending too much and whether the plan’s funds were distributed equitably. Proposed charter revisions would cap tax increases, make it easier to recall officials
A local attorney is pushing yet another change to city law that would limit city leaders’ power to raise taxes.
Attorney Jim Roberts said this week that his group has mailed more than 200,000 petitions to Nashville voters, hoping to get six proposed revisions to the Metro Charter on the ballot in May or June. Last year, Roberts and his team secured the necessary signatures to get a different version of the proposal on the ballot, but a Nashville judge
deemed it illegal and said it could not go before Davidson County voters. ....

Efforts still underway to bring racing back to Fairgrounds Speedway in Nashville: UPDATE

Metro Nashville is in talks with Bristol Motor Speedway to bring NASCAR televised racing to an improved, historic Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway. Such racing could take place as soon as 2022.
A successful agreement would preserve and upgrade Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway as one of Nashville’s unique entertainment assets. Such an agreement would also turn the track into a significant money-making operation for the Fairgrounds.
The Speedway is the second-oldest operating motor speedway in the United States, dating back to 1904. It has a storied connection with racing, including being a showcase for legendary drivers such as Dale Earnhardt, members of the Petty family and our own Darrell Waltrip. ....
