A decade back in Las Cruces: Thanks for the memories

Ten years ago I came home. Wife, cat, and I moved from Oakland to Doña Ana County, where I lived during 1969-1977 and thought of as home thereafter. When I met my wife, she suggested we move here. (I even thought I might someday write a Sunday newspaper column.)
This afternoon, sitting in the Mesilla Plaza eating chocolate ice cream, I felt like saying, “Thanks!”
Thanks to old friends and new, for a decade of poetry, laughter, political and environmental activism, and conversation. Thanks to the PVA, and to progressive elected officials for their tireless work to keep New Mexico enchanting; and to the dedicated volunteers who created and run our community radio station. Thanks to the cat, Bear, for all he taught me before he died, and to Foxy, the dog, for all she’s teaching me now. Thanks to the Organ Mountains and the (sadly diminished) Rio Grande for quiet walks and wildlife.
SANTA FE – The Legislative Finance Committee will hold its May meeting in Las Cruces with an agenda that includes reports on evaluations of the unemployment insurance system and the state Department of Information Technology, higher education’s role in preparing work-ready college students, and federal stimulus funds for childcare providers and others, along with local issues. Here is a statement from the finance committee:
“The committee is excited to get back on the road and into the communities of New Mexico after a year of remote meetings. Zoom makes the work doable but nothing is better than hearing directly from people throughout the state about the local and state issues that are important to them,” said Chairwoman Patty Lundstrom, D-Gallup.

LAS CRUCES – Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham approved $28.2 million in capital outlay projects for Doña Ana County as part of a $511 million capital bill this month; and for the first time, the public can see how and where state legislators and the governor directed the public infrastructure dollars under their discretion.
That s because lawmakers passed a law during this winter s 60-day legislative session requiring the previously secret funding requests to be published by the Legislative Council Service along with the funded projects, including projects that were vetoed.
Lujan Grisham vetoed a small percentage of projects, including three in Doña Ana County, explaining in a statement that she eliminated projects that were too small (under $10,000), projects where the proposed recipients have not used capital funds from the current fiscal year, were not properly planned or otherwise not ready to proceed.
