Starting July 30
th, the Harrison County Utility Authority will begin the first part of its two-part project to replace almost 14,000 feet of sewer pipe in Long Beach.
The project on the east half of the city, from Nicholson Avenue to South Forest Avenue, will begin by the end of the week while construction on the area west of South Forest to Menge Avenue will start in late August.
The over $4 million project, funded by the Restore Act and local funds, will replace an aging concrete sewer transmission main causing constant pipe breaks. John L. Wilson, P.E. with the Harrison County Utility Authority said, “Every time we have a break, we spend from $100,000 to $180,000 to repair it. And when the break happens, of course the sewer goes in the ground and storm drain, into the canals and of course into the bay.”

Plans for Buc-ee’s on the Coast

The Texas-based convenient store and ultimate road trip stop will soon be breaking ground in South Mississippi.
In addition to the $50 million invested in the Buc-ee’s Mississippi location off the Menge Avenue exit, $15 million will go into infrastructure improvements, expanding the Menge Avenue overpass from two lanes to five.
The overpass will expand in every direction to adapt for all the expected traffic to come. Harrison County Development Commission Executive Director Bill Lavers said, “We’re standing at the Northwest corner of I-10 and Menge Ave, it’s going to be the future home of Buc-ee’s, which will be about between a 70 and 80,000 square foot convenient store. It’ll drive about five million visitors to Mississippi on an annual basis. It’s a 50-million-dollar investment and over 200 jobs paying more than $15 an hour with full benefits.”

Travelers stopping for gas, snacks, clothing, and more at Buc-eeâs, noticed the supersized gas station in Texas branched out to states like Alabama, Georgia and Florida. The popular convenience store along Southern interstates will transport countless gas pumps, tasty barbecue sandwiches, and ultra clean restrooms to a new spot in South Mississippi.
With 39 locations, Buc-eeâs is setting up shop just north of Pass Christian. Thatâs fabulous news to the companyâs many customers along the Mississippi Gulf Coast. It will take two years to build the giant convenience store near the Menge Avenue exit 24 off I-10. That canât happen fast enough for folks eager to welcome the first store in the Magnolia State showcasing its beaver mascot.
