Ciaran McMenamin doesn t read reviews of his work which is a shame as his new novel The Sunken Road has been launched to widespread critical acclaim. Hailed by critics as astonishing , tremendous and the author himself as being an exceptional talent , McMenamin is chuffed when told about the reaction but insists he learnt some time ago as an actor not to read reviews. It s negativity that he can t stand and so much so that he shut down all of his social media accounts a few years ago - a massive step for anyone in the spotlight. But the Fermanagh man insists his life is so much richer for it: I learnt over the years as an actor to not look for the reviews unless someone sent me one and friends tend to only send you the good ones. ....
Enniskillen actor and writer Ciaran McMenamin is celebrating a film deal for his newly published second novel, The Sunken Road, set in the First World War and during the partition of Ireland. The Sunken Road, which was published this week by Harvill Secker, is a story of love, loyalty and obsession. Events take place along the Western Front in the Great War and on the hills and rivers of Fermanagh four years later, as the War of Independence ignites along the border newly laid down by Partition – the centenary of which takes place this year. McMenamin says his characters are shaped by many of the tumultuous events commemorated by recent centenaries. ....

Lee and the Army of Northern Virginia and it seemingly had no answer. Backstabbing and in-fighting among the Union’s Army leadership were rampant. President Lincoln had appointed a series of commanders looking for the one who would be able to take on Lee and beat the outnumbered but resilient enemy. By the time of the Battle of Fredericksburg in December 1862, Lincoln had given command over to Ambrose Burnside. Burnside had the opportunity to surprise Lee but a series of failures would ultimately cause another Union debacle. In the battle of Fredericksburg Burnside’s army of 114,000 would engage Lee’s 72,500; it would be the largest battle of the Civil War. ....
