 Metro is reminding Green and Yellow line customers to plan ahead for scheduled track work May 1-9 that will require free shuttle buses to replace trains at four stations over one weekend and the weeklong closure of West Hyattsville. The work will upgrade the interlocking system at Fort Totten, which allows trains to safely cross from one track to another. ....

The Village of Schaumburg has emerged from the Fiscal Year 2020/21 having reduced expenditures more than $23 million during the year to address a revenue loss of $38 million. Additionally, the village reaffirmed its AAA bond rating from Standard and Poor s Global Ratings Agency and restructured outstanding bonds to achieve a savings of $25 million.
The proposed Fiscal Year 2021/22 budget begins the process of reinstating some operations and programs that were reduced in the previous year because of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. No new increases in property tax or other taxes are included in the budget. Although the budget charts an optimistic financial plan given vaccine distribution and restrictions being lifted on local businesses, the village remains cautious based on a fragile economy that is at the early stages of what is expected to be a gradual recovery. ....

Semi-private cabanas to be added to pool project


The Garden City Commission approved the addition at its regular meeting Tuesday.
Aaron Stewart, Garden City Parks and Recreation director, said rental space was included in the original design, it could either be one big rental space or could be divided into two smaller spaces.
The cabanas would be a more a bit more intimate spaces, enclosed on three sides with shade structures that could be rented out more easily rather than renting out the entire pool.
We do believe that these would be a highly popular item to have there to rent for birthday parties or family get-togethers or just so you have your own space while we re operating, he said. ....

The detailed number for the borough budget is $173,496,346. And will require taxpayers to pay $13.799 for every $100,000 in value of their property. That mill rate is just under 1% less (down .092 mills) from last year.
Ward says he was able to check several boxes with the spending plan, including keeping it  $6,594,684 under the voter approved tax revenue cap, and he put 10% of tax revenue, $12,006,660, in the Capital Improvement and Maintenance Reserve. The biggest expense in the budget is the contribution to the school district, and there is no change from last year.
He also balanced the budget but only with leftover money from last year. $5,643,294 went unspent. ....
