Here’s what you should check out this week: Honoring a legend: Today would have been James Baldwin’s 97th birthday. Authors Darnell Moore, Marlon Peterson, and Kiese Laymon who have all written memoirs exploring Black manhood will discuss Baldwin’s lasting legacy in “Historically Speaking: Reflecting on the work of James Baldwin and Black Masculinity,” a talk from the National Museum of African American History and Culture Museum. Monday 8/2 at 7 PM; Free, register here. Bring a blanket: Fort Reno is back this year with its legendary summer concert series dating back to 1968. Island faith leaders look to renewed hope and peace: Continuing on through lockdowns and worries

(Credit: Courtesy photo) Reverend Robert Griffin, pastor of Shelter Island Presbyterian Church, recently realized one of many truths that have emerged from the pandemic. “COVID has tested our characters, but more importantly, it’s revealed our characters,” Reverend Griffin said. “Sometimes in wonderful ways, sometimes in quite other ways. COVID has done that in our town, in our country and in the world.” He, along with other faith leaders, is looking at an Easter and Passover markedly different from the spring of 2020, when COVID locked down in-person services for most of the significant holy days of the Christian and Jewish traditions.
