Most Clay coaches believe the competition in the Northern Lakes League will be similar to the Three Rivers Athletic Conference, but a little more balanced. “I’m excited about it. I think it is going to be good for our school,” said Clay athletic director Mark Beach. “While I’m excited, we’ve won 25 championships in the 10-year run in the TRAC. That is going to be a tough challenge in this new conference. Just in sheer volume of teams, it is going to be a deeper league, so you’re going to earn a league title because you are going to wade through a lot of tough teams.

By a 4-0 vote on Tuesday, the Oregon City Schools Board of Education voted to leave the Three Rivers Athletic Conference and join the Northern Lakes League. The addition of Clay, Whitmer, Findlay and Fremont Ross to the NLL will create an 11-team league that will begin play in 2023-24, unless the schools are released from their current conferences earlier. Fremont Ross voted to accept the invitation on April 12 followed by Findlay on April 19. The NLL will be divided into two divisions.

Central Michigan University senior wrestler Matt Stencel (Clay) went 1-2 at the NCAA Division I national tournament and failed to place this year. Stencel, the No. 3 seed at 285 pounds and a two-time All-American, overcame a 5-2 deficit in pinning Binghamton’s Joe Doyle, the 30th seed, with 30 seconds remaining in the match to open the tournament. At this point, Stencel was 11-0, but he would lose two straight to finish 11-2. In his next match, Stencel dropped a 2-1 decision to Wisconsin’s Trent Hillger. Stencel took a 1-0 lead with an escape early in the second period.
