Soldiers confiscated 100,000 meth pills abandoned by traffickers during a gunfight on Wednesday in Chiang Mai province, the army said yesterday.
Soldiers from the Third Army Region seized the pills, which were in a large backpack made from a fertiliser bag, as well as a cap gun following the clash in a forest in a border area of Chiang Mai s Mae Ai district.
The soldiers were patrolling along the border to prevent illegal entry and drug trafficking, said their commander, Col Ekkawut Sukkharos.
While in the forest they stumbled upon four people carrying backpacks. When the soldiers challenged them the suspects opened fire, triggering a gun battle that lasted about five minutes. ....

The recent call by Indonesian President Joko Widodo for a meeting with his colleagues on the Myanmar crisis is gaining traction. It is now possible to say that the proposed leaders meeting could take place at the end of this month, after the Songkran break and the Muslim Ramadan festival.
Senior Asean officials will have to decide tomorrow whether to have the physical meeting either in Bandar Seri Begawan or the Asean Secretariat and the preferred date. Both places have their own merits in discussing the Myanmar crisis. Therefore, the right timing is imperative for a face-to-face rendezvous. The government has shipped items donated by different organisations to Karen refugees fleeing the violence in Myanmar, the Third Army Region said on Monday.
Its commander, Lt Gen Apichet Suesat, who is in charge of security in the North, said he had instructed the 36th Ranger Forces Regiment to deliver the donations, which included dried food and medicines, to Myanmar citizens sheltering on the banks of the Salween River, opposite the Thai border in Mae Hong Son. ....
