Behind the Scenes: The cast and crew of Capping Show tell all The annual Otago Capping Show is back for its 127th year, with shows running from May 13 to May 21. Critic sat down to chat with some of the cast and crew to talk about what went into creating this year s performance and everything in between. Actor Lucy, Video Director Alex and Stage Director Jacob have all been part of Capping Show in previous years, falling in love with it from the get go. “I knew about the Capping Show before I came to Dunedin. I went and thought it was amazing,” said Lucy. “I auditioned as a writer, and have been acting for the past two years.” ....
Redheads to be banned from campus from Tuesday The dreary walk into University up Union St East was made a little more exciting on Wednesday morning, with the already scaffolding-covered College of Education Auditorium surrounded by four fire engines responding to the sight of smoke. According to a University spokesperson, a “small, smouldering” fire started up backstage in the Auditorium at 8.15am on Wednesday May 5th, at which point usual emergency protocol was followed, and 30 people were evacuated from the building. Another 32 were evacuated from the Childcare Centre, but around 9:30 in the morning the fire was extinguished by the fire department. No one was harmed in the incident. ....
Chunder, Challenges, and Controversy: A look back at Otago’s debaucherous Capping Week Not so long ago, in the 1950s, students at Otago would have been in the middle of intense party preparations at this time of year. Throughout most of the 20th Century, May graduations (known as Capping) were celebrated with a week of festivities including social events, stunts, and extreme binge drinking. In the early days, lectures were cancelled for the week because the Uni knew that no one would show up. All that remains of the week for us today is the Capping Show, but Capping Week used to rival O Week. Instead of just having a disappointing fresher toga party in the Union Hall, the Capping Committee hosted a variety of events all week long, for everyone to attend. This is a catalogue of all the events that would have been on show for you if you attended Otago in the mid-20th century. Not that you would have been sober enough to remember many of them. ....
