The mysterious Harrand Fort | Footloose

The once mighty Fort now gives a desolate account of our neglect of precious heritage
Thanks to one of my PhD students doing research on Cholistan forts, we made several trips to the great desert and visited dozens of forts during the course of their research. On one such trip, we ended up visiting Rahim Yar Khan, and even though the Harrand fort was not a part of our study, we decided to visit it as well.
It was almost dark when we left Rahim Yar Khan for Rojhan. At nearly midnight, we crossed the River Indus by boat bridge. We were told when we started this journey that the passage to Rojhan and Rajanpur was not safe, particularly at night. We were thus provided armed guards who piloted us in their jeep. Around midnight we passed by the town of Rojhan and started our journey on the National Highway towards Rajanpur. A few kilometers before Rajanpur our guards said goodbye to us and about half an hour after midnight we were in Rajanpur. Historias maintain that the word ....

Crossing the Khyber

Crossing the Khyber
Travelogue
Leaving Istanbul we headed South on to the Anatolian Plateau to the exotic Cappadocia region. Goreme then Konya, home to the famed Whirling Dervishes. There would be no Konya or the Whirling Dervishes if it were not for Jalaluddin Rumi.
Rumi was born in Balkh, in the Khorasan district of Persia. After a pilgrimage to Bagdad, Mecca and Damascus, the family eventually settled down near Konya in a village called Rum. Hence Rumi.
Rumi today is closely identified with Sufism and Sufi Mysticism within Islam where devotees sought a mystical union with God.
During his travels Rumi met Shams ad-Din meaning The Sun of Religion, a wondering Sufi from Tabriz. ....

'Are you Muslim first or Indian first?': How I discovered my identity

In 1996, a day after India’s fantastic win over Pakistan in the Cricket World Cup quarterfinal, I was sitting in the offices of a leading English daily in Patna. At that time, I used to be a freelance contributor to this national paper’s local edition.
The paper’s features team and I were, of course, discussing cricket. Everybody was trying to guess which strategy the Indian team would adopt against a resurgent Sri Lankan team in the semi-finals.
All of a sudden, the discussion meandered to a new topic: “Is it true that every Indian Muslim secretly cheers for the Pakistan cricket team”? Later, a more specific question was thrown at me by one of the sub-editors: “Tell us what is more important to you, being an Indian, or being a Muslim? If you had to decide between one or the other, which one would you choose?” ....

Gopi Chand Narang’s study of the form links it to a flourishing liberal climate in the country.
English readers have loved Russian classic writers, the French naturalists, and the Latin American greats without even bothering to know the names of their English translators.
The Translator’s Invisibility, the famous title of Lawrence Venuti’s 1995 book, can best represent the outstanding effort of Surinder Deol in making Gopi Chand Narang’s exposition of the history, beauty, and formal intricacies of the ghazal a memorable affair and yet remaining unsung. ....
