ISLAMABAD: Upsets are not being ruled out in Sunday’s 11th general elections to the Azad Jammu & Kashmir Legislative Assembly (AJKLA), with close fights expected in at least a dozen constituencies where prime ministerial candidates are trying their luck.
Simultaneously, the contests for 12 seats of Kashmiri refugees settled in Pakistan evoke immense interest and attention as any political party winning in most of these constituencies will land in a position to clinch the top executive slot in AJK. Only a few thousand votes would suffice to bag a seat. Traditionally, the provincial governments have a lot of influence in such elections. ....

JIAJK terminates membership of former emir - Newspaper

MUZAFFARABAD: Jamaat-i-Islami Azad Jammu and Kashmir (JIAJK) has terminated the basic membership of its former emir and sitting member of the Legislative Assembly for withdrawing his candidature in favour of a PTI candidate.
Abdul Rashid Turabi, who served as JIAJK emir for 21 years (from 1990 to 2002 and from 2008 to 2017), was elected as the member of the sitting assembly as an ally of the PML-N against a seat reserved for the technocrats.
Apart from him, the PML-N had also given another reserved seat to a female JIAJK activist in return for the party’s support in the last general elections.
However, this year the JIAJK decided to contest elections on its own and had fielded as many as 30 candidates against 45 general seats, Mr Turabi being one among those from LA-15, Bagh-II. ....

AJK elections: Small leads may produce intriguing results

ISLAMABAD: Ten of the 12 seats allocated to the Kashmiri refugees settled in Pakistan fall in Punjab while one each lies in Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).
In the 2016 general elections to the Azad Jammu & Kashmir Legislative Assembly (AJKLA), all the ten Punjab seats were won by candidates fielded by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), which was in power at the federal and Punjab level. Similarly, the KP seat was bagged by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) which ruled the province and the Sindh seat was taken by the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), which governed the province.
This time, the PTI has the federal, Punjab and KP governments while the PPP retains its previous position in Sindh. The polling for these 12 seats will be held on July 25 along with 33 directly contested constituencies located in the AJK territorial limits. ....
