Thornbury High Street to stay closed except for drop-offs

Thornbury High Street will stay closed to traffic, with the exception of deliveries and pick-ups/drop-offs, under proposals announced today. South Gloucestershire Council say the plans will meet the current and future needs of residents, but they have been been rejected by Thornbury and Yate MP Luke Hall - who says disabled residents and those with reduced mobility will be left completely unable to access the High Street. The closure of the High Street has been a divisive issue since it was introduced in June. Many of the town s residents and business owners have vocally opposed it, and a recent petition calling for the road to reopen has gathered more than 1,000 signatures, while others have been more receptive to the idea.

Tree planted in memory of long-serving Thornbury councillor

A tree has been planted at the Mundy Playing Fields in memory of a Thornbury councillor. Clare Fardell died in August following decades of service on both Thornbury Town Council and South Gloucestershire Council. She was also a school governor at Gillingstool Primary School for many years and was well known in Thornbury. Covid-19 restrictions unfortunately meant that only a few of her many colleagues and friends could join Clare’s husband for the tree planting last Tuesday. Deputy mayor of Thornbury, Chris Davies, said “Clare made an enormous contribution to the town and was involved in many projects and organisations that improved the lives of local people, such as the Over 60s Team Room at the Town Hall, Thornbury In Bloom and Thornbury Volunteer Centre.
