Recent rain helped move most of Travis County out of dry conditions

Rains in Houston have saturated the soil, and that could lead to more flooding from runoff.
But in Central Texas, the return of sunny days and dry conditions will be just in time for the unofficial start of summer: Memorial Day weekend.
Before we get too excited about the coming summer heat and sunshine, let s recap the effect of the recent rains.
On Saturday and Sunday, nearly an inch of rain 0.82 was recorded at Camp Mabry, Austin s main weather station, according to the weather service. The two-day total helped push the Austin area above normal for this point in the month for rainfall. ....

Rain forecast for Friday but drought conditions likely to worsen

As drought conditions intensify around the state, Central Texas could use the dose of rain forecasters say is coming Friday, but it might not be much help.
The old rhyme about April showers bringing May flowers fails to take Austin s fickle spring weather into account. April isn t really even Austin s rainiest month that s actually May, which produces, on average, up to 4.44 inches of rain.
Still, April normally sees about 2.09 inches of rainfall. But this year, with a little more than a week left in the month, Austin s main weather station at Camp Mabry has recorded only 0.46 of an inch.
The city is practically parched compared with last year, when April had 2.88 inches of rainfall. April 2019 had 7.28 inches, one of the top 10 totals ever recorded for that month at Camp Mabry, according to the National Weather Service. ....

Where to see beautiful bluebonnets in around Texas this spring

Where to see beautiful bluebonnets in around Texas this spring
If you re wild about wildflowers, check out these Texas spots in full bloom.
April is that magnificent month when bluebonnets blanket fields, pop up in parks, and dot roadways in every corner of Texas.
Our beloved state flower got a later start this year due to drought conditions last fall, and early plants got walloped in February s historic winter storm, experts say. While 2021 may not be a blockbuster wildflower season, the colors will still be beautiful around Texas for the next few weeks. In fact, with 2020 s travel restrictions behind us, plans for spring bluebonnet festivals (presented safely amid the ongoing pandemic) are full speed ahead in hot spots like Burnet (April 9-11), Chappell Hill (April 10-11), Ennis (April 16-18), and Fredericksburg (April 24).  ....

Tracking Altoona history | News, Sports, Jobs

[email protected]
A new photo-laden book about Altoona’s railroad history may be one of the few positives to come out of the myriad cancellations in 2020.
Ken Kobus of Pittsburgh and Gary C. Rauch of Boulder, Colorado, recently published “The Pennsylvania Railroad’s Muleshoe, Horseshoe, Altoona and Beyond,” a 148 page, stitched, softcover, landscape-format book with 10 pages of text and more than 200 photos and maps, including many in color. Photographs range from the 1860s through the early 1970s.
Published by the Pennsylvania Railroad Technical & Historical Society, the book is available at https://prrths.org and will begin shipping Tuesday.
“The book is intended to be accessible to people of all degrees of interest in the subject, and so we did not assume a lot of prior knowledge,” Rauch stated in an email. “At the same time, as we and others dug into the subject further, bouncing questions around, and digging some more, what we came up wi ....
