The Coonamessett River Trust Is Clearing The Way For Herring To Run


The number of herring in Massachusetts has dropped dramatically since the 1970s. The Coonamessett River Trust is taking steps to help turn that around in Falmouth.
“We’re trying to monitor and get some kind of idea of what the population of the herring is in the Coonamessett,” said Wendi B. Buesseler, president of the trust.
Linda A. Deegan, senior scientist at the Woodwell Climate Research Center in Falmouth and a trust board member, said that in 2019 a total of 5,969 fish were counted in the Coonamessett River, which the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries estimated to be 60,000 total fish, down from its 2016 estimate of 81,000. ....

Falmouth Town Meeting OKs Fire Truck Purchases, Rejects Land Transfer


Falmouth s first-ever virtual Town Meeting authorized the purchase of two fire trucks on Monday, January 25. 
While approving $5,802,500 in capital projects, Town Meeting members appropriated $870,000 for a new fire engine and $100,000 for a reserve fire/rescue vehicle suitable for service at the West Falmouth fire station.
Select board member Douglas C. Brown moved the amendment requesting $100,000 for the reserve vehicle, noting the town does not currently have a backup fire engine. 
We feel, here in West Falmouth, it is definitely a necessary element in keeping the station open, said Paul Sellers, Precinct Six. Not having a backup vehicle and using the West Falmouth truck to supplement the other areas of town certainly leaves a void for many of us that we feel, safety-wise, in West Falmouth.
