Wyoming Hit By Drought: Reduction In Antelope License Quotas For 2021 Hunting Season Proposed – Sheridan Media

By Mark Davis
Drought is affecting most western U.S. states, including Wyoming. The National Drought Mitigation Center says that’s resulting in multiple responses from changes in regulations to preparations for an early and long fire season.
In Wyoming, the Game and Fish Department is already reacting to dry conditions, proposing to reduce antelope license quotas for the 2021 hunting season. In many hunt areas, the proposals cut the quota due to “impacts from persistent drought conditions in the state,” the department said in a Friday press release. Tough spring blizzards also compounded the problem.
“The license reductions should be short-term, according to wildlife managers who believe the conservative proposals for each herd will stabilize pronghorn populations and allow them to bounce back,” the department said. ....

Wyo. Game and Fish issues 2k more elk tags as herds exceed goals

Elk populations in Wyoming’s major herds are nearly 30% over objective, Wyoming Game and Fish Department personnel revealed as their governing commission approved hunting seasons and nearly 2,000 additional licenses Wednesday.
Some 101,800 elk populate the state’s 28 closely monitored herds, according to the estimates presented in the agency’s proposed annual hunting-season-setting regulations. That’s 28.6% above the objective for those groups.
In addition to the 28 herds for which the agency makes individual population estimates — through trend-count or population-model methods — seven additional herds are managed for landowner/hunter satisfaction and have no numerical objective. Some 8,400 elk made up those seven groups combined last year, Game and Fish estimates. ....

CASPER, Wyo. 15 “extreme weather events” from 2010-2020 cost Wyoming “up to $5 billion in damages,” the White House said in an information sheet released on Monday.
President Joe Biden’s administration is highlighting what they see as the need to invest in infrastructure improvements across the country as part of the proposed “American Jobs Plan.” The White House released information sheets on problems in each state which the proposed $2.3 trillion infrastructure package would aim to address, including for Wyoming. ....

8 more reasons no one should want to move to Colorado

8 more reasons why this state isn t so great.
1. Fire risk
In 2020, four different fires that burned in Colorado were larger than the largest blaze to ever previously occur in the state. Cameron Peak Fire was 208,663 acres, East Troublesome Fire was 192,560 acres, Mullen Fire burned mostly in Wyoming, but was 176,878 acres, and the Pine Gulch Fire was 139,007 acres – all larger than the Hayman Fire of 2002, which reached 137,760 acres.
Those included, eight of the 10 largest Colorado fires took place in the last decade. As Colorado continues to struggle with drought, dry conditions persist, as does an increased fire risk and a high possibility of large future blazes. It s common for wildfires to impact daily life in the Centennial State, whether that means a weekend off of outdoor recreation or a blaze burning down your own property. ....
