BackYard Sapphire: Couple starts grassroots movement to recycle glass in Lafayette
Gallons of glass in all shapes, sizes and colors sit awaiting their crushing fate in the backyard of Tina Crapsi and Dawn Vincent.
The pair run BackYard Sapphire a grassroots glass recycling movement, turning glass donations back into sand and glass mulch based in their Lafayette backyard.
Being cost-efficient and eco-friendly are the couple’s driving forces from collecting rainwater to soak the glass in, to the end product being a creative reuse of glass.
Glass mulch has myriad benefits. It reduces weed growth and keeps weed roots towards the surface, doesn t hold moisture like typical mulch, reduces mildew and mold, doesn t blow away with a leaf blower and is safe to walk on.
