U.S. Covid-19 cases increased by about 65,000 Friday, in a week in which new infections declined by 12%. Many states are pressing ahead with reopening and Senate passage of President Joe Biden’s $1.9 trillion stimulus bill sets the stage for added support to the economy.
But cases and hospitalizations remain high, falling just recently to the levels of the surge last summer. Deaths remain well above that level. Hospitalizations in New York, the state with the highest levels in the U.S., fell to less than 5,000 for the first time since early December. Protesters in Idaho burned masks. ....

The coronavirus outbreak in the U.S. continued to ease as the average daily increase dropped about 20% from the week before. The White House issued its strongest criticism yet of the World Health Organization’s handling of the investigation into the origins of the Covid-19 virus and China’s involvement in the probe’s findings.
U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he is optimistic the government will be able to start announcing the relaxing of restrictions later this month.
France has the fastest pace of immunization against the Covid-19 virus among the four most populous European Union countries, according to the latest snapshot by Bloomberg’s vaccination data tracker. ....

(Bloomberg) The Covid-19 variant that emerged in the U.K. and sparked concerns of faster spread could become dominant in the U.S. as soon as March, U.S. public-health researchers said in a report.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said the city will run out of vaccines by next week due to supply shortages. New York state will receive 50,000 fewer doses next week than it did the week before, Governor Andrew Cuomo said. Other states, including New Jersey, Oregon and Colorado, said they are not receiving enough vaccine. ....
