March 17, 2020, will be a day restaurant owners in North Carolina won t soon forget.
That was the day Gov. Roy Cooper announced that as of 5 p.m. that day, restaurants and bars across the state must close their doors to dine-in customers and switch exclusively to takeout and delivery due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Some restaurants around Fayetteville, already built to accommodate these unprecedented changes, saw sales increase. But for many, it was like their business fell off a cliff.
Restaurants had to totally change their business models, pivoting to offering groceries, online cooking classes and other ways to serve their customers while struggling to stay afloat. Many restaurants closed some permanently. ....

FSU needs to graduate more students; the chancellor-elect gets it

While Fayetteville State University students marching on Murchison Road protesting the chancellor selection process is grabbing headlines, what isn’t getting attention is that more than 60% of the incoming freshman won’t be marching across the stage to get their degrees in five years.
FSU has the worse retention and graduation rate among HBCUs and other universities in the UNC university system. According to the UNC System website: “By 2022, FSU will improve its five-year graduation rate from any accredited institution to 36.0%. This is an improvement over a base of 29.9% for FSU’s 2010 cohort.”
A website graph shows FSU’s actual performance for 2019 was 39.7%. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, 39.9% of Black students graduate within six years. Some of my friends in higher education will say FSU numbers aren’t too shabby. Perhaps, this is the norm for HBCUs’, but about 90% of the Black ....

Fayetteville State University alumni raise concerns about chancellor

A week before a new chancellor is scheduled to start at Fayetteville State University, more than 25 of the school s alumni marched to protest how he was selected.
Darrell Allison was elected by the University of North Carolina System board of governors to become the 12th chancellor to serve Fayetteville’s historically Black university. He starts next Monday. ....

Fayetteville resident shares secret to reaching 100 years old

When Fayetteville resident Elmer Hall reflects on his century of living, he has one word to sum it up good.
“I’ve had good friends, a good marriage and good children,” said Hall, who turns 100 on March 14.
And part of his good life has involved more than 60 years of work and flying.
Hall grew up on Murchison Road in Fayetteville and still remembers going to church in horse-drawn buggy.
“We had wild blueberry bushes down on the creek in the woods,” Hall said Thursday. “And you fish and caught fish and had fish to eat and the creeks and the ponds. We did a lot of things different than you do now, and surviving wasn’t really that hard.” ....
