India is mulling a new strategy to strengthen the country’s cybersecurity after a report released by a United States-based firm suggested a Chinese cyber campaign targeted India’s power grid, resulting in a power blackout that brought India’s financial capital Mumbai to a standstill in October,
Bloomberg reported on Monday.
The Ministry of Power had confirmed that it was aware of the Chinese cyber campaign to use malware to target India’s power network. However, it said that there was no no data breach due to the incidents.

The New York Times reported on a study by cyber security firm Recorded Future, which claimed that Chinese malware was flowing into the control systems that manage electric supply across India. It went on to say that a massive power outage in Mumbai last October, which sent economic activity in the city into a tailspin for some hours, could have been set off by Chinese state-backed hackers. Immediately afterwards came the news that Telangana power utilities TS Transco and TS Genco had successfully thwarted cyber attacks from China that targeted at least 40 electricity substations. ....

MUMBAI: BJP leader Sudhir Mungantiwar on Wednesday said he will write a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking a CBI probe into the alleged cyber attack from China that caused massive power outage in Mumbai last year, as claimed by Maharashtra minister Nitin Raut.
Mungantiwar made the remarks in the state Legislative Assembly. ....

New Delhi: Power utilities in Telangana removed malware that they spotted after being alerted by the Computer Emergency Response Team of India (CERT-In), raising further suspicions about cyber intrusions by Chinese-backed hackers targeting India’s power grid system.
According to news agency PTI, a heightened state of alertness would continue for some more days.
“We noticed some malware. Immediately, we erased that. We have taken all the preventive steps. Absolutely, there is no problem,” a senior official told PTI. ....
