Scottish church to remember WW2 battle in poignant ceremony

AN Edinburgh church with a poignant connection to one of the most well-known battles of the Second World War will hold a special service of remembrance this weekend.
In 1952, the minister of Blackhall St Columba’s brought to his new charge a cross made at the battle of Monte Cassino, which took place between January and May 1944 in Italy, where he had served as a military chaplain.
Reverend RJ Watson Mathewson was part of the Corps Re-inforcement Unit, and a fellow soldier in the Pioneer Corps made the simple cross which is still central to worship in the church today. ....

Disastrous Dieppe raid was decoy for secret Enigma mission

The disastrous Dieppe raid during World War Two was designed as a decoy by James Bond writer Ian Fleming so German refugee commandos could secretly pinch the Nazis new Enigma coding machine, a new book claims.
German refugees who had escaped the Nazis were reportedly put at the at the centre of military planning for the August 1942 raid on Dieppe in France by Lord Mountbatten and Fleming, then a senior naval intelligence officer.
A new book entitled X-Troop: The Secret Jewish Commandos of World War Two describes how the five refugees were supposed to break into a hotel used by Nazi military commanders and steal the Enigma machine and its code books while Allied troops staged a frontal assault on the occupied port.   ....

Two years after ordering the mass internment of German refugees at the start of the second world war, the British government put a small, elite group of them in military uniforms and sent them on a secret cloak-and-dagger mission to occupied Dieppe to snatch an Enigma coding machine from under the Nazis’ noses.
A new book published later this month presents extraordinary evidence that the refugees, all Germans who had fled from Nazi-annexed Sudetenland, were at the centre of military planning for the daring and ultimately disastrous August 1942 raid on Dieppe. The idea was that while British and Canadian troops staged a frontal assault on the port, a group of five refugee soldiers would break into a hotel used by Nazi military commanders and steal both the Enigma machine and the code books that enabled the German ....

Couple made new lives in Norfolk after escaping Nazi Europe

“This meant very little to me at the time but sounded quite romantic,” said Thomas.
“Now of course I look back and realise what Trudi and Erhart must have gone through when they fled in 1938 and arrived in Norfolk. I also admire my grandparents for taking them in to their home in Norwich and later Thorpe End.”
Erhart was a man of much standing, being a doctor of law in Prague and by profession a barrister.
Mystery still surrounds their escape from Hitler’s “mad dogs”, but it was our former editor Tom Copeman who came across them in the restaurant at Cromer. ....
