The News: With the approach of National School Choice Week, January 24-29, the Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty (WILL) provides a first of its kind look at Wisconsin’s open enrollment program, arguably Wisconsin’s largest and most popular school choice program. Wisconsin’s open enrollment program serves more than 62,000 Wisconsin students who choose to attend public schools outside of their designated attendance zone. This new study charts the history of the program, the fiscal and enrollment impacts on school districts, and recommendations for reform.

Hudson counselor earns national recognition

HUDSON Out of more than a hundred thousand counselors nationwide, Hudson’s own Sarah Flier was selected as one of five finalists for the American School Counselor Association’s National Counselor of the Year.
Flier, who works at Willow River Elementary, was selected as the Wisconsin Counselor of the Year earlier this spring.
“This was a complete shock,” Flier said of being selected as a finalist for national recognition.
The state-level nomination allowed her to apply for the national award. The process entailed an application including essays and videos of her leadership, collaboration and work for systemic change. She was one of the first Wisconsin counselors selected as a finalist in more than 10 years. ....

'A fundamental right': Madison schools consider a new way to teach reading | Local Education


If you had asked one of Lisa Hepburn’s fifth-grade students to pronounce the word “pandemic” not too long ago, he’d try “pandora,” “pandemonium” or “just kind of guess whatever.”
But more recently, Hepburn, a reading specialist at Randall Elementary School, watched that same student “who’s reading at a second-grade level as a fifth-grader chunk out words like ‘tranquility.’”
She credits the “science of reading,” a literacy teaching method the Madison Metropolitan School District is shifting toward as it confronts low reading proficiency rates among its students. It’s a move away from the “balanced literacy” approach the district has had in the past, in which literacy is taught through a variety of readings and word studies, to a more phonics-focused format of teaching students how to read. ....

MMSD, UW-Madison School of Education form early literacy task force


The Madison Metropolitan School District and University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Education hope a new task force can improve literacy instruction for teachers and outcomes for students.
The 14-member Early Literacy and Beyond Task Force announced Monday includes seven members from each entity who will “focus on analyzing the most promising approaches to teaching reading and making recommendations to MMSD and to teacher education programs at UW-Madison toward the goals of improving reading outcomes and reducing achievement gaps,” according to the announcement.
MMSD superintendent Carlton Jenkins said in a press conference Monday the effort toward better literacy teaching was overdue. ....
