Former Mesquite postmistress Concha Contreras turns 100 this month

Concha Contreras of Mesquite is turning 100 on May 29, 2021.
Contreras has been a lifelong resident of Mesquite excluding being born in Carlsbad and a few years spent in Colorado as a little girl  though traveling was a constant during her careers with Western Union and the U.S. Postal Service.
Contreras was born the fourth of 10 children. After high school, Contreras “broke tradition” and started working for Western Union rather than get married. The telecommunication company sent her to cities like St. Louis, Chicago, New York and Los Angeles for trainings.
Later, she married Roberto Aguilar, her next-door neighbor in Mesquite, and had two children, Dan Aguilar and Yolanda Young. Contreras subsequently started working for the U.S. Post Office as the Mesquite postmistress. Close to 31 of her years were spent at the post office, with travels to Hawaii, Puerto Rico, British Colombia, Washington D.C. and other locations during that time. ....

The coronavirus feels the way it looks in widely circulated images, said Cleo Otero: like a thorn.
“That’s how it felt inside my body, especially my lungs. It was painful. Like it was scratching the inside of your body. I could really literally feel the virus inside my body.”
Otero’s first clue she was sick came at the laundromat in Albuquerque where she usually buys a bag of spicy chips as she waits on her clothes. On that Friday in July, she couldn’t taste the chips, and she couldn’t smell them either. A headache came on, the kind with intense pressure behind the eyes. At first she thought it was due to her diabetes because she hadn’t been consistent lately with her medication. By Saturday, she was laid out on the couch in the one-bedroom apartment she shares with her partner and 7-year old son. By Sunday, she had a fev ....

LAS CRUCES – Bingo! Alma’s Kitchen, formerly housed in the parish hall of St. Genevieve’s Catholic Church, will make its new home on the New Mexico State University campus in Frenger Food Court.
Alma’s Kitchen has been run out of the parish hall kitchen for 10 years. Arik Ruiz, Alma’s son, has been the owner for four years, since his mother retired. He and his Mexican food have become popular among bingo players who used to frequent the hall before it closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Since March, Ruiz’s restaurant has been closed. To make ends meet, he started delivering groceries through Instacart and food deliveries through OrangeCrate. Meanwhile, he still tries to keep in touch with his elderly customer base, making sure they have everything they need while the novel coronavirus runs rampant throughout the county. ....
