When will museums open again?

In the government’s four-step roadmap to remove lockdown restrictions, museums in England can reopen on Monday 17 May. So while shops and libraries can open from Monday 12 April, we’ll have to wait another month after that until we can return to our favourite collections and explore new exhibitions for the first time. In Scotland, Monday 26 April is the opening date, while Wales and Northern Ireland have yet to announce one.

The Art Newspaper, last year visitor numbers at the world’s top 100 museums and art galleries were, unsurprisingly, down 77 per cent from 2019. Which means revenues have plummeted, staff have taken redundancy and exhibition budgets have been cut, despite financial assistance from the government’s Culture Recovery Fund. When is VAT reduced rate going back up for pubs?


The Government has been pressed to extend the reduced VAT rate beyond the spring to protect some 310,000 jobs in the hospitality and tourism sector.
A survey of more than a thousand businesses found 90% felt the VAT cut on food, soft drinks and accommodation in July 2020 was “important, very important or crucial” to their business.
More than 75% said they might not have been able to continue trading without it.
The research was carried out by the Cut Tourism VAT (CTV) Campaign, UKHospitality, the Tourism Alliance and the Association of Leading Visitor Attractions.
Operators said if the VAT rate reverted back to 20% in April it would mean further job losses and the CTV estimated this could amount to 310,000 redundancies. ....
