For ice fishermen on northern Michigan’s frozen lakes, it’s easy to feel like climate change is a world away. But it’s only a matter of time before a warming planet transforms the tradition.

Amid the frozen Michigan fields past the homemade signs for hubcaps, hard cider, and firewood lies Houghton Lake. Surrounded by forest and farmland, it is one hundred miles from the state capitol and two hundred from the state’s population centers. The lake borders a town of four thousand people and a “census-designated place for statistical purposes” that just breaks seventeen hundred. U.S. Route 127 appears to give up right around here; after barreling north from Tennessee for seven hundred and fifty miles, the highway ends. In the middle of Michigan, there aren’t many people or cars.
Tip-Up Town USA to Host Informal Gathering in 2021

While Tip-Up Town USA has been canceled this year, festival organizers are asking the community to come together for an informal Tip-Up Town event.
Organizers say there will be no vendors, rides or a beer tent, but there will a dance party on Houghton Lake at noon on Saturday, Feb. 27.
Tip-Up Town USA, as most of you now by now we had to cancel our event, however I want to have an informal Tip-Up Town…

Karl Schwartz wishes he was simply chasing glory on the snowmobile racing track. Instead, in recent years, he has been forced to chase increasingly elusive cold weather.
Schwartz, of Freeland, is president of the Midwest International Racing Association, a snowmobile racing circuit operating primarily in Michigan for more than 40 years. Their weekend races draw about 100 teams, hundreds of racers and crew members, and thousands more fans, usually as part of a local community s winter festival.
But each year, as Michigan s climate changes, it s getting harder to do.
Houghton Lake Tip-Up Town postponed until February due to COVID restrictions

HOUGHTON LAKE, MI The popular Tip-Up Town USA festival in Houghton Lake has been postponed by more than month due to ongoing restrictions revolving around the COVID-19 pandemic. According to the Associated Press, the festival will now take place on the weekend of Feb. 27-28, instead of the previously announced weekend of Jan. 16-17.
