A Norfolk food ministry gets support after nearly shutting down

NORFOLK, Va. The COVID-19 pandemic has forced many organizations to change the way they operate, including the way in which they distribute food to families in need.
A Norfolk food ministry almost shut down due to the pandemic, until they were able to get some much-needed support.
On Sunday, volunteers with the Village Family Ministry stuffed bags, boxes of food, and clothes for families in Norfolk.
Village Family Ministry Founder Natisha Wilson said the need in the community has grown throughout the pandemic. ....

YOUNGSTOWN Everett Backus Sr., 85, received his heavenly wings on Jan. 7, 2021, at Mercy Health St.Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.
Mr. Backus was born May 29, 1935, in Youngstown, a son of the late William Alexander Backus and Irene Buckins Backus.
He attended The Rayen High School and was employed at the United States Steel in McDonald, Ohio, for more than 30 years. After retirement, he worked at Caprice Care Center in North Lima.
He was of the Baptist faith and a longtime active member at Mount Gilead Baptist Church.
He served on the trustee board and loved singing in the male chorus. He also attended First Calvary Baptist Church later in life. In his early years, he was the leader of the drum and bugle corps at the Buckeye Elks Youth Center. ....

Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott Commits Over $5.3M in COVID-19 Emergency Food Relief Plan – EURweb

Brandon Scott’s (D) office announced a new plan this weekend to help feed thousands of city residents who are being hit hard by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
As part of the new plan, over $5.3 million will be put toward providing 20,000 food boxes weekly to residents.
“COVID-19 has deepened the inequity of food insecurity, especially in our Latinx and Black and Brown communities,” Scott said in a statement announcing the effort on Friday. “As we approach the new year, many Baltimoreans are concerned about losing valuable federal resources that will expire in the new term.
“With this initiative, the City will be able to ensure there is no gap in support to feed our families over the next few months,” he continued. ....
