Charlotte severe weather threat Thursday

More Our WCNC Charlotte news team was out tracking the storms. Meteorologist Chris Mulcahy tracked the severe weather from inside the Chevy Storm Tracker. Severe storm outlook A warm, moist area moved into the Carolinas by Thursday midday. That warm air primed the atmosphere with thunderstorm fuel needed to make supercells, a powerful thunderstorm capable of becoming severe.  As a cold front then moved eastward across the Carolinas, it produced storms along the boundary between the warmer, moist air and the cooler air riding along the front. Tornado threat Meteorologists expected a 5-10% chance of seeing a tornado in Charlotte and communities south and east. The probabilities increased the further south and east of Charlotte you traveled. These percentages are historically very high for the Carolinas.

Are NC, SC schools closing due to severe weather threats?

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools district leaders said the district moved to full remote learning Thursday.  The district places the safety of our students, staff and schools at the forefront and will take all precautions to keep everyone safe, district leaders said in a statement.  Chapter two: Iredell-Statesville Schools In a statement to WCNC Charlotte, Iredell-Statesville Schools said it operated on a normal schedule Thursday and monitored the conditions to keep parents and students updated. Chapter three: Rowan-Salisbury Schools WCNC Charlotte reached out to the Rowan-Salisbury Schools district for information on any possible changes to the Thursday schedule. At this point, WCNC has not heard back.

First Warn meteorologist Iisha Scott said there will be even more snow on Christmas Day, with up to 4 inches possible in some areas.
