The Turtle Survival Alliance (TSA) announced last week that it has captured, tagged and released the 99th and 100th alligator snapping turtle (
Macrochelys temminckii) in Buffalo Bayou, located in Houston, TX.
The 99th turtle, a 131lb male is nicknamed J.J. Watt, after the defensive end football player with the Houston Texans. The 100th turtle is a 31 lb female, who represents what the TSA calls a milestone in the organization’s conservation initiative. The species is listed by the state as threatened. ....

OKC Zoo Houses Young Alligator Snapping Turtles To Help In Conservation Effort

The OKC Zoo received 11 young alligator snapping turtles through a partnership with the Tishomingo National Fish Hatchery, which has a program to raise, rear and reintroduce the vulnerable species into their native habitat. 
Before being released back into the wild, Seamus Ehrhard, the OKC Zoo’s assistant curator of herpetology, says the turtles will stay at the zoo until they are about four-years-old. 
“Alligator snapping turtles really have no natural predators as an adult, but when they re younger and they’re smaller, they have predators such as mammals, birds and other turtles,” he said. “So during the very sensitive time when they’re very young, if you take the time to grow them up and feed them and make sure they re very healthy before we release them, the odds are they have a higher chance of having a better lifespan and surviving in the wild.”  ....

Huge Alligator Snapping Turtle Is Nearly The Size Of The Guy Holding It | 98.7 The Gater

An older photo showing a giant alligator snapping turtle, that is bigger than the torso of the man holding it, is circulating on the Internet.
The photo was originally posted back in May 2016 by Rebecca Bedell Boaze with the caption, Look what a friend caught on Caddo in Uncertain, TX this morning.
Alligator snapping turtles are a protected species in Texas and can live from 50 to 100 years old despite reaching maturity around age 12.
They are the largest freshwater turtle in North America and spend most of their lives in the water.
Caddo Lake in Texas is known for alligator snapping turtles. However, this beast really takes the cake! ....
