NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) The results are in following the Department of Education’s Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT) and some say it’s the test that’s not making the grade.
The results show the percentage of Black and Latino students receiving offers is down
again. CBS2’s Hazel Sanchez reports Schools Chancellor Meisha Ross Porter is calling on the state to eliminate the test.
Tenth grader Maelena Vega took the SHSAT when she was in 8th grade. Her artistry landed her a coveted spot at LaGuardia High School, but her testing score earned her an offer at one of the elite eight high schools that require the SHSAT. ....

Though the entire world was dominated by Covid this year, North Queens was certainly the first section of the city to truly feel its effects. The largely Asian population faced Covid-19 induced discrimination and small shops suffered from a severe drop in business, a struggle they continued to combat throughout the remainder of the year.

New York City on Friday announced major changes to how thousands of students are assigned to middle schools, replacing a merit-based system that critics say exacerbated segregation with a lottery that is expected to create more diversity at the most sought-after schools.
The move was driven by the coronavirus pandemic, because tests typically used for admissions were not administered last spring. Selective high schools in D.C., Boston and San Francisco have also jettisoned admissions tests for the coming academic year, citing the crisis. Although these districts could reinstitute old systems after the pandemic abates, advocates have been pressing for these changes for years, and many expect them to outlive the pandemic. ....
