The Jaeger Guard Company F. 32 Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment, shown here in the 2019 Alton Memorial Day Parade, will again be participating in the 154th annual parade Monday at 10 a.m. During the Civil War the regiment, comprised of men from Alton and Upper Alton, lost 268 men to battle and disease.
ALTON Dick Alford will serve as grand marshal for the 154th Alton Memorial Day Parade on Monday.
The parade will step off at 10 a.m. from Alton Middle School, 2200 College Ave., where staging will begin at 8:30 a.m. Monday. No rain is forecast for Monday, and about 50 units are scheduled to participate in the parade, according to Steve Schwartz of the East End Improvement Association.

It looks like the Alton Memorial Day Parade will feature most of what spectators have come to expect over the years, as the entries for this year’s event continue to come in. Marching bands, floats, and candy are all part of the celebration in Upper Alton, which will return to full strength after a miniature parade last year due to the pandemic.
This year s parade will step off from Alton Middle School at 10am on May 31. East End Improvement Association spokesman Steve Schwartz tells The Big Z participant interest has been pretty good.

A portion of one of the area’s busier roads will be getting a makeover, but the work is still a few years away. Fosterburg Road from Culp Lane to the Illinois 255 interchange has been approved for a $2-million Congestion Mitigation Air Quality Grant through the East-West Gateway Council of Governments.
Alton Public Works Director Bob Barnhart announced the funding Monday on The Big Z.

Barnhart says these projects take a lot of time to coordinate with IDOT, so the actual construction is targeted for 2025. In other city business, the Committee of the Whole approved a resolution for the East End Improvement Association to use a portion of Rock Spring Park to stage the Memorial Day Parade. The new mayor and city council will be sworn in tomorrow (Wednesday) night.
