Caroline Nesaraja: Providing nothing but the best nuclear data | US Department of Energy Science News

Nuclear physicist Caroline Nesaraja of the Department of Energy s Oak Ridge National Laboratory evaluates nuclear data vital to applied and basic sciences. Her work ensures that the scientific community has the best nuclear data for fundamental research and applications including medical isotopes, nuclear energy and national and international security.
At the heart of nuclear data evaluation is recommending values for a range of nuclear properties for the community to adopt and use, said Nesaraja. Her exacting evaluation process starts with gathering extensive nuclear structure and decay data from experimental measurements published in peer-reviewed journals. ....

Stable nickel-64 nuclei take three distinct shapes | US Department of Energy Science News

Stable nickel-64 nuclei take three distinct shapes
Scientists track down coexistence of multiple shapes in the Nickel-64 nucleus: a spherical ground state and elongated and flattened shapes
DOE/US Department of Energy
The Science:
Scientists have identified three distinct shapes in stable nickel-64, a stable isotope of nickel. These shapes appear as energy is added to the nucleus. The nucleus in the lowest-energy state is spherical. The nucleus takes elongated (prolate) and flattened (oblate) shapes as the protons and neutrons surrounding the nucleus gain energy. This change demonstrates profound changes in the way protons and neutrons can arrange themselves. This result required an orchestrated effort at four major nuclear science facilities to achieve the sensitivity needed for the experiments. ....

The map of nuclear deformation takes the form of a mountain landscape
Until recently, scientists believed that only very massive nuclei could have excited zero-spin states of increased stability with a significantly deformed shape. Meanwhile, an international team of researchers from Romania, France, Italy, the USA and Poland showed in their latest article that such states also exist in much lighter nickel nuclei. Positive verification of the theoretical model used in these experiments allows describing the properties of nuclei unavailable in Earth laboratories. ....
