Transcript: Miami Police Chief Art Acevedo on Face the Nation, May 30, 2021

There Seems To Be A Lot Of Turnover Among Police Chiefs In Texas Largest Cities Why?

/ After four-and-a-half years leading the Houston Police Department, Art Acevedo has stepped down to take the role of top cop in Miami. Longtime HPD officer Troy Finner is the current chief. Ahead of Finner s swearing-in ceremony, Acevedo removed his badge and pinned it onto Finner s uniform. In recent months, five of the largest cities in Texas have seen their top cop leave. The reasons for their exits are varied. But one thing is known: The average tenure for some big-city chiefs in Texas is in decline. Troy Finner, a 30-year veteran of the Houston Police Department, became HPD’s new leader this April. That makes Finner the fourth new big-city police chief appointed in Texas since January. Finner was preceded by Al Jones in Arlington, Eddie Garcia in Dallas and Neil Noakes in Fort Worth.

Police reform call grows for national use-of-force standard

More Coverage President Biden in his first address to Congress on Wednesday urged lawmakers to pass the House measure. “We have to come together to rebuild trust between law enforcement and the people they serve, to root out systematic racism in our criminal justice system and enact police reform in George Floyd’s name that passed the House already,” he said. Bass is working with Senate counterparts Sens. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) and Tim Scott (R-S.C.) on a compromise that could get enough Republican support to pass the Senate. Scott has his own bill, which does not go quite as far as the House version. Scott’s bill focuses mostly on enhancing training and the reporting of use-of-force incidents. It would encourage departments to adopt federally recommended standards.
