Analysts: Expect More Coys to Jostle for Infrastructure Tax Credit Scheme

Following the Federal Executive Council’s approval for a number of key infrastructural projects to be undertaken by the Dangote Group and four other companies in place of their tax obligations under the Road Infrastructure Development and Refurbishment Investment Tax Credit Scheme, some economic watchers at the weekend said the current state of infrastructure in Nigeria will compel more companies to key into the scheme.
MTN and BUA Group are some of the private sector companies that won the bid to construct federal roads as part of the Road Infrastructure Tax Credit Scheme.
Other participating private sector firms are Access Bank, Transcorp Group, GZI Industries, Mainstreet Energy, and Dangote Group. ....

 Mohammed Nami has a penchant for shedding crocodile tears over the colossal failure of the institution he superintends. The chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) lamented at a recent business gathering in Kano that Nigeria’s tax revenue was a paltry six percent of gross domestic product (GDP), when Ghana’s tax collectors rake in revenue that amounts to 17 percent of the country’s GDP.
South Africa’s tax revenue is 28 percent of GDP even as Nami blames Nigeria’s archaic analog tax processing system for the low tax revenue. Nami lamented that the low tax to GDP ratio does not befit Nigeria’s status as Africa’s largest economy. ....

Nigeria, for about one and half decades, has been on a journey with the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB), with a lot of anticipation and promises, which failed overtime in previous National Assemblies. However, two years into the Ninth Assembly, the two chambers at plenary on July 1, passed the Bill for third reading after duly adopting all the 318 clauses as recommended by the Committee on PIB after some amendments. With this latest development, it seems the Ninth Assembly is set to make history, if the PIB is eventually assented to by President Muhammadu Buhari. ....
