Difficult times ahead as debt servicing to go up 35pc: Pasha

LAHORE: Former finance minister of Pakistan, Dr Hafeez Pasha on Tuesday warned of the difficult times ahead, as the country witnessed the highest single-month import figure of $6.3 billion in June 2020, while the current account deficit remained $1.3 billion in this period.
Addressing an economic session on âPakistan Economy-Challenges and Solutionâ organised by the Pakistan Industrial and Traders Association Front (PIAF), he predicted that the total annual import figure would go as high as $70 billion, which would be impossible to manage with exports of just $25 billion.
The ceremony was also addressed by Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) former president Mian Anjum Nisar, PIAF Chairman Mian Nauman Kabir and senior journalist Sikandar Lodhi. ....

The Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry’ s Businessmen Panel Chairman Mian Anjum Nisar has said that the growing circular debt in the power sector is a continued threat for the economy, as financial imbalance is looming large because of mismanagement, incompetence and lack of transparency have marred the power sector.
Mian Anjum Nisar said that the power sector circular debt issue should be resolved holistically without escalating electricity cost, as its size has doubled during the last two years in spite of raising the power tariff multiple times in the past. ....

Businessmen call for uninterrupted gas supply to industrial sector

The Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry’s Businessmen Panel Chairman Mian Anjum Nisar, while calling for uninterrupted gas supply to the industrial sector, has urged the government to up-grade gas distribution and supply system to avoid losses.
Moreover, condemning the jump in rates of petroleum products, he stressed the need for reducing tax ratio on oil products to support the trade and industry, as the government has been charging very high petroleum levy and sales tax on petroleum products.
In a statement issued here on Sunday, Mian Anjum Nisar, observed that with a view to improve the cash flow of businesses at this crucial time, the government will have to facilitate the industry through reduction in tax ratio on all items including the oil products, besides lowering the markup rate, as the country’s economy is going through a challenging phase of post-Covid-19 pandemic. ....
