[WATCH] Bartolo: Middle East flare-up worse than ever as neighbours turn on each other Xtra on TVM | Foreign Affairs Minister Evarist Bartolo and Opposition spokesperson Carmelo Mifsud Bonnici converge on the Israeli-Palestine conflict 13 May 2021, 10:00pm by Nicole Meilak Malta’s foreign minister Evarist Bartolo said he has been in contact with counterparts on a bid by Egypt, Tunisia and Qatar to ease the Middle Eastern flare-up in Palestine. Bartolo said that the current situation was now worse than what it was in recent years, after Israeli forces bombarded swathes of the Gaza Strip in retaliation at rockets fired by Hamas militias. ....
On Sunday morning, March 9, 2008, Labour Party carcades celebrated election victory. Labour’s bungling secretary general, Jason Micallef had declared that Labour won with a strong majority. That afternoon, Labour’s celebrations ceased abruptly. By 5pm, TVM hinted at a PN victory. After four nail-biting hours, PN secretary general Joe Saliba confirmed victory. But Micallef still insisted, in a statement, that the parties were still neck and neck. The PN’s victory was razor-thin. Alas, that victory was truly pyrrhic. It spelt five years of turbulence, disloyalty and treachery from within the party in the midst of a global economic crisis. Prior to discussing the orders of the day, Foreign Affairs Minister Evarist Bartolo gave a short speech to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Istanbul Convention. Evarist Bartolo noted how Turkey, the country that first ratified the convention, announced last month that it will be withdrawing from the convention. ....
A general election is imminent. Labour has launched an English language news portal and dishing out direct orders like there’s no tomorrow. The electorate faces one critical question: can Labour be trusted with a third term? Third terms spell disaster for the political party, subsequently condemned to years in the wilderness. But it is the country and its citizens who bear the deep-creased scars of third terms. On the eve of the 1981 election, Dom Mintoff appointed Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici leader designate. Mifsud Bonnici orchestrated Labour’s campaign. Labour lost the popular vote but retained its majority in parliament through gerrymandering and, as a result, retained power, defying the people’s will. ....
