Reef Fish In Peril

Reining in the Aquarium Trade
Each year humans trade 20 to 30 million tropical marine fish for aquariums, representing more than 1,800 different species. The United States is the world’s largest consumer, buying up to 80% of the tropical fish on the global market. The aquarium trade is largely unregulated and untracked, and collection often involves practices like cyanide poisoning that hurt the entire coral reef ecosystem. And while captive-breeding efforts are expanding, at least 90% of aquarium fish are still caught in the wild.
For almost all aquarium fish species, scientists don’t know how many are left in the wild, so it’s impossible to know if the staggering demand for pet fish is driving them toward extinction. ....

Coastal News Today | CA - Housing project with two lakes approved in East Contra Costa

After years of delays, a large redesigned housing project with artificial lakes got the go-ahead from the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors to build in far Eastern Contra Costa County.
Lazares Development Inc., which purchased the property at the eastern end of Point of Timber Road 22 years ago, had originally envisioned the widening of Kellogg Creek for waterfront homes with docks and the construction of a Sheriffs’ Marine Patrol Substation.
The waterfront project, called Panatages Bay, was approved in 2013, and again in 2015 with modifications, but the developer faced multiple delays and difficulties obtaining state and federal permits for certain parts of the project, including a shoring wall, so by 2019 began reconfiguring its plans. ....
