EDF rejects radioactivity concerns over Hinkley Point dredging

EDF rejects radioactivity concerns over Hinkley Point dredging
EDF has this week rejected concerns about radioactivity from its dredging in the Bristol Channel around Hinkley Point power station near Burnham-On-Sea.
A coalition of concerned Bristol Channel researchers and campaigners says they have undertaken a pre-dredging radioactivity survey near Hinkley Point because “EDF, who want to dump radioactivity in the Bristol Channel, refuse to do it.”
The coalition, representing interests from both Welsh and English communities along the Bristol Channel/Severn estuary coasts, has appealed to the CEOs of the Marine Management Organisation and Natural Resources Wales (who must both adjudicate on EDF’s application to dredge) and the Westminster and Welsh Governments, who oversee those two agencies, to postpone any dumping decision until the survey results are published. The coalition has also formally requested a Public Inquiry to discuss the issues. ....

Changing climate could be hampering juvenile salmon numbers

WARMER winters and cooler springs have been linked to lower numbers of juvenile salmon in Dorset s River Frome.
New research probing the influence of temperature and flood events on juvenile Atlantic salmon found that warmer winters and cooler springs could be driving a fall in their numbers.
Experts from the Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust (GWCT) studied the River Frome and found numbers of juveniles were lower following unseasonal temperatures, which, they say, could be associated with climate change.
Dr Jessica Marsh, who led the research for GWCT, said: “Our findings highlight that changes to seasonal temperatures in chalk streams – groundwater-fed rivers that are considered relatively stable in their thermal regime compared to more dynamic rain-fed rivers – can have detrimental impacts on juvenile salmon recruitment in these systems. ....

Following its five-yearly Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) assessment, the South Georgia Patagonian toothfish longline fishery has, for the third time, been certified as a sustainable and well-managed fishery, according to the newsletter from the government of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands.
The fishery is managed by GSGSSI with scientific advice and support from the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) and the Centre for Environment Fisheries and Aquaculture Sciences (Cefas).
Dr Mark Belchier of the British Antarctic Survey said: “The MSC re-certification is a strong endorsement of the value of long-term scientific research for underpinning policy and decisions that lead to responsible management of fisheries. The waters around South Georgia are a key source of food for globally important colonies of albatross and petrels. ....
