Wastewater testing in Casper and other Wyoming towns finds no evidence of invasive mussels

CASPER, Wyo. The Wyoming Game and Fish Department said on Tuesday that the department tested wastewater samples for a three-month period from March-June following the discovery of invasive zebra mussels in moss balls sold at some pet stores in Wyoming.
The wastewater testing in Casper, Cheyenne, Laramie, Sheridan, Gillette and Rock Springs revealed no DNA evidence of zebra mussels.
“These initial test results are promising,” said Game and Fish Director Brian Nesvik. “We’re glad to get negative results but we know zebra mussels are hearty and their life cycle is long. Continued monitoring remains important before we confidently know that zebra mussels have not spread in Wyoming.” ....

County reels back elk feeding stance


Teton County elected officials are backpedaling on urging wildlife managers to start weaning elk off of artificial feeding, a step one county commissioner said was prudent to avert the worst consequences of recently discovered chronic wasting disease.
The request to do something sooner rather than later was expressed in a draft letter that commissioners were going to send to the Wyoming Game and Fish Department. Elected officials also mentioned giving private landowners incentives to tolerate elk that might disperse from historic feed lots.
But while meeting Monday, two commissioners described taking those positions as being “out over our skis.” So now the board is softening its tone and delaying recommendations regarding the historic and controversial practice. ....
