Beloved husband and father, Leslie Milton Graham, 95, of Marshalltown, IA passed away Sunday, April 11, 2021, at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 14, 2021 at First United Methodist Church in Marshalltown. Visitation will be 9:30 a.m., until the time of the services at the church. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery with military honors provided by the Marshalltown Combined VFW and American Legion Honor Guard. Leslie was born in Rothsay, MN, July 9, 1925, The family moved to Burt, IA where Leslie grew up in a family of five brothers and four sisters along with his parents Jay and Clara Graham. '(Re)Invigorate' Marshalltown | News, Sports, Jobs

The arts in Marshalltown are being highlighted in a film series entitled “(Re)Invigorate.”
The series features dancers and Marshalltown natives Toree Benson, 22, and Nick Cooper, 21. The first video in the five-part series was released Jan. 8, and the second will be available for viewing on Friday.
The first video was filmed in the Gallery Garden on Main Street. In it, Cooper can be seen dancing amongst the plants and the art pieces. Benson was holding the camera and operating the drone.
The film series is sponsored by the Marshall County Arts & Culture Alliance and the first video can be seen on the website and the social media pages on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube. Amber Danielson, executive director of the Alliance, said Cooper and Benson reached out to her with the series proposal. ....

United Way meets campaign on last day | News, Sports, Jobs

Marshalltown Area United Way reached its campaign goal of $780,000 on Friday – the last day of the campaign.
Executive Director Nancy Steveson said despite the unusual year 2020 was, Marshalltown residents proved themselves to be truly generous.
It was a great way for Steveson to retire from her role. Kendra Sorenson will be the new executive director at the beginning of February.
“We are very excited to meet the goal,” she said. “In light of COVID, and after the derecho – we are still displaced from that – we are just ecstatic to meet this goal.”
Following the August derecho, United Way was moved from the Fisher Community Center, which was condemned. Since then, the organization has been operating out of a space in the old YMCA building. ....

Council continues payments to community FCC | News, Sports, Jobs

The Marshalltown City Council will continue making annual payments of $100,000 to the Fisher Community Center as previously agreed upon despite the building being unusable because of derecho damage.
In 2019, the council approved an agreement to make $100,000 annual payments to the Fisher Community Center for rent, operations and maintenance. The issue of continuing these payments was raised during Monday’s regular council meeting for clarity on whether public use was a precursor for payment with tax levy dollars.
The council moved to continue payments and note public use is not a requirement for payment.
The center sustained significant damage during the derecho in August and has since been unavailable for public use. Before the storm, the Fisher Governor Foundation which oversees the center began having its unique art collection restored. About $350,000 was raised for the restoration project. ....
