Bandits kill prominent Tanzanian human rights campaigner


TANZANIA (eTN) – Prominent Tanzanian human rights campaigner and activist, Dr. Edmund Sengondo Mvungi, died on Tuesday following serious injuries he suffered after a bandit attack in his home early this month amid security volatility in Tanzania’s capital city of Dar es Salaam.
Once a journalist then a law lecturer and Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Dar es Salaam, Dr. Mvungi played a leading role in campaigning for democratic changes in Tanzania, and was selected a member of the Constitution Review Commission (CRC) working to write a new constitution that will lead Tanzania to achieve its democratic leadership. ....

MEDIA stakeholders have expressed appreciation to President Samia Suluhu Hassan for directing authorities to desist from the tendency of banning and suspending media outlets.
“We are excited and elated,” said Kajubi Mukajanga in a statement reacting to the wide ranging speech by the president.
The remarks were part of assignments being given to permanent secretaries and their deputies after their being sworn in, along with several heads of key executive agencies. What she said raised high expectations, the veteran head of the self-regulating media ombudsman declared.
The speech also shed light on the way forward to review media laws and regulations, to amend them as required so that our country will be a nation that talks and freely discusses issues. ....

PRESIDENT Samia Suluhu Hassan yesterday signaled that the government is turning a corner in its stance on media freedom and liberty of expression, with a directive that all banned media outlets be unchained.
Media stakeholders were quick to react to the president’s decision saying it was a new beginning and a big step in media freedom in the country.
Kajubi Mukajanga, veteran Executive Secretary for the Media Council of Tanzania (MCT) said he commended the president because the matter was tainting the country’s image abroad.
“We believe that the ministry shall quickly work on addressing the issues without hesitation. We thank the president for seeing it,” he said, noting however that there is need for the president to look at media laws which are harsh on the media. ....
