The formula to calculate whether South Africa is experiencing a fresh spate of Covid-19 infections says a wave starts when the seven-day moving average of new cases exceeds 30% of the peak of the previous wave.
Few other countries use this formula. Many nations instead monitor the number of new Covid-19 cases, the test positivity rate (the proportion of tests coming out positive) and hospitalisations.
The country’s first and second waves lasted three months each with three months in between. The third wave’s duration, however, won’t necessarily follow the same trajectory.
